I had to end my TV viewing abruptly, as the nurse came in the room calling out my name. I was to sign another form; a declaration form of my personal belongings. I knew that my surgery is coming up. I kept my specs and handed over my handphone and my wallet to the nurse.

I was shown to lie down on a trolley bed. The nurse brought me to the operating theatre (OT) on the trolley bed. I was handed over to the OT staff, and they prepared me with surgical preparations.

The room was very cold, as I was shivering from head to toe. The OT staff in the room could see my persistent shiver. I was hoping the surgery begin sooner than later, so I can forget about tolerating the cold temperature in the room.

Finally, I knew the surgery was about to begin when I was give general anesthesia (GA) to breathe in. In short, GA is sleeping pill. One can doze off immediately, with a few sniffs of this GA and leave you unconscious for the whole duration of your surgery.

A beeping sound kept ringing in my ears. I opened my eyes to find out where that beeping sound came from. I noticed a monitor in front of me that seems like monitoring my heartbeat. That was where the sound came from.

I looked around my surroundings; I am still on my trolley bed. But I am in another room. There were a few people in their trolley beds too getting their heartbeat and pulses checked, just like me. Only then did I realised that the surgery was over. I asked the nurse attendant, who was checking me up; about the duration it took for my surgery.

Date: Friday, 04/01/08

I register myself to Ward 63 at SGH in the morning; the ward I will be staying for my post-surgery treatment. And the ward staff was expecting my arrival. I found out from them that my surgery is due later today, not immediate.

I expected my surgery to be the 1st case, as arranged before my admission today. Usually 1st cases are expected to begin surgery at 8.00. But the night before my admission, I received a call from the ward nurse that my surgery is being ‘pushed’ to a later time.

That call calmed the nerves, even if it was just a little. I was to register to the ward at 8.00, Friday morning.

Back in my room, I was approached by the ward doctor. He briefed me about my surgery, and requested me to sign a consent form agreeing to the surgery.

I signed it, hoping for the best in the surgery and post-surgery treatment. The clock showed 8.20.

Soon after the doctor had left me, a few nurses came by to introduce themselves and inform me of my surgery. Tentatively, my surgery is at 11.00.

10.20.

Teachers form their own band at Ping Yi Secondary School

I recently read an article on Yahoo! Singapore News about my old school, Ping Yi Secondary School. I want to share this article to all ex-Ping Yians out there.

From Yahoo! Singapore News

School bands are probably not very unusual in many schools, but here is one school where the teachers have come together to form their own band.

Students from Ping Yi Secondary School tell us us more in this clip submitted for our Roving DV Competition.

The students are proud of their school where teachers work together to provide an education that is not merely academia and where the learning environment is that of fun, music and stimulation.

They reach out to students through music and teach them values of camaraderie.

One unique method of reaching out is through their very own Teachers’ Band!

Students say they are very honoured to have with them some very multi— talented teachers who have come together to inspire through their music.

A student reporter interviewed one of the talented teacher.

Kavin Bakhda, Student Reporter, Ping Yi Secondary School, said: "Miss Ang, our student body is totally mesmerised by your voice and the songs the band plays. Do tell us, how does it feel to know that you inspire us in more ways than one?"

Ang Shui Hui, Vocalist, Teachers’ Band, Ping Yi Secondary School, said: "Well, I am very happy to be part of the Teachers’ Band and we are just having fun and it’s very nice to know that we are touching our students in more ways than one.

"Music transcends all languages and we actually hope to bring across the message that enjoyment can come in good and clean ways. And if you are feeling upset or feeling down, music is simply an outlet to express your emotions, either through playing music or merely listening and being absorbed."

Kavin Bakhda said: "Thank you for your enlightening words, Miss Ang. We hope that like us, you have been inspired by these wonderful teachers and their unique and endearing ways of trying to reach out to us. From Ping Yi Secondary School, I’m Kavin."

For five straight days starting 7th January 2008, the top five finalists in the Roving DV Competition will be shown on News5 Tonight/Singapore Tonight.

Quote of the Day

Since Christmas is coming, I like to share this quote to my readers.

Giving is the highest expression of potency. In the very act of giving, I experience my strength, my wealth, my power. This experience of heightened vitality and potency fills me with joy.

I experience myself as overflowing, spending, alive, hence as joyous. Giving is more joyous than receiving, not because it is a deprivation, but because in the act of giving lies the expression of my aliveness.

Joke of the Day!

THE SHREDDER

A young executive was leaving the office at 6 p.m. when he found the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in hand.

"Listen," said the CEO, "this is important, and my secretary has left. Can you make this thing work?"

"Certainly," said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.

"Excellent, excellent..." said the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine. "I just need one copy."
